Xirrus Announces Industry’s First Power over Gigabit Ethernet for Wi-Fi
Xirrus, a California-based company, currently stands somewhat apart from other Wi-Fi hardware vendors, claiming to be the only supplier of high-performance, long-range products. The official press release released yesterday added another touch of uniqueness to the company’s position: Xirrus is now the only company to offer Wi-Fi solutions with support for remote power over Gigabit Ethernet.
This is a Xirrus Array (pictured) that integrates up to 16 RF units, a wireless controller, and a dedicated RF “hazard sensor” unit in one device, giving consumers maximum coverage and bandwidth per cable run. The ability to power this entire farm through the existing Gigabit Ethernet line reduces the number of individual boxes and cables, simplifies installation and connection.
The solution provides up to 60 W of power transmission over a distance of 100 m over Category 5e or 6 cables, and is suitable for all versions of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Array. Two Xirrus High Power over Gigabit Ethernet solutions are available: one for one port, the other for eight ports. The latter is designed as a 1U rackmount module. Either way, four or eight pins are used to carry DC power in a four-pair wiring.
Power over Gigabit Ethernet for Wi-Fi equipment to start shipping in June.
