Micron, Elpida and Hynix cause DRAM prices to drop
Micron Technology, Elpida Memory, and Hynix Semiconductor’s increased production of dynamic memory (DRAM) has led to overproduction of this type of product. In turn, the excess of supply over demand sent prices into a rapid downward flight.
Industry sources claim the three mentioned manufacturers have switched their 200mm platter factories back to DRAM. Prior to that, each of the companies produced its own type of product at these facilities: Micron – CMOS image sensors (CIS), Elpida – specialized DRAM chips, Hynix – NAND flash memory. However, the results of this activity turned out to be lower than planned.
Increased production volumes in the current quarter are expected to result in a 20-30% increase in global DRAM shipments compared to the first quarter.
Previously, experts attributed the decline in DRAM prices to weak demand, so manufacturers decided to try their luck in other markets.
Hoping to carve out a niche in demand, Micron shifted most of its 200mm production capacity to CIS – it was expected that the demand for image sensors would come from cell phone manufacturers. In fact, demand turned out to be less than expected.
Elpida believes that the consumer electronics market will show steady growth this year. When demand in the months since the beginning of the year was insufficient to demand all of Elpida’s dedicated DRAM, the manufacturer decided to revert to standard DRAM.
Hynix, slightly lagging behind Samsung Electronics and Toshiba in the race of generations of NAND flash memory, also decided to shift 200mm production to DRAM. However, industry sources add, Hynix will return to NAND in a few months, after the technological gap with competitors is closed.
