Intel chief: Silverthorne will be the most important product since Pentium
In an interview with the German Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), Intel CEO Paul Otellini compared the industry’s upcoming Silverthorne mobile processor with the company’s 8088 and Pentium processors.

In a conversation with reporters, Otellini said that the scope of such processors will not be limited to laptops and UMPCs – Intel expects to occupy a niche with them in the mobile phone market, from 10% to 20% . At the same time, such processors will be manufactured according to 45-nm standards (the current Pentium M on the Dothan core and the recently introduced McCaslin A100 and A110 use a 90-nm process technology). The updated technology will result in a radical reduction in power consumption and heat dissipation – TDP will be 0.6-2.0 W.
In addition, the Silverthorne manufacturing process, according to Intel, should be the most cost-effective since the release of Intel 80286, which debuted back in 1982.
When using a 45-nm technical process, the output of a crystal from one 300-mm substrate will be approximately 2500 pieces. Thanks to this, Otellini predicts that the average price of a device with Silverthorne will be only $ 100.
