NVIDIA To Showcase G80-Based GPGPU Boards In June
Almost half a year has passed since NVIDIA released its first graphics accelerators with support for the new DirectX 10 graphics API. During this period, the lower price bar of such solutions managed to drop from $ 500 to $ 300 (due to the release of the GeForce 8800 GTS, 320 MB), and this month a total offensive of the company’s DX10 accelerators in all price ranges is coming. In May, the manufacturer will release new flagships – 8950 GX2 and 8800 Ultra.
In June, according to the source, we are expecting another (or several) products using the G80 graphics core. This accelerator will be used for general purpose computer calculations (GPGPU), not for accelerating 3D graphics. According to NVIDIA CEO, the G80 is ten times faster in floating point operations than the most powerful modern central processing unit.
Last year, there was speculation on the Internet that NVIDIA was preparing its own x86-compatible processor. Now we can say with greater confidence that the company is striving to enter this market in a slightly different way.
NVIDIA is not a pioneer in its approach. AMD / ATI announced their FireStream GPGPU accelerators back in the fall of last year, although they have not yet been seen on the market. It can be assumed that the competitor decided to release such motherboards based on the R600 chip, not the R580. In this case, it is quite possible that both competitors will announce similar products in June.
NVIDIA is on the side of this confrontation – well-organized mass production of G80 and CUDA. The strength of AMD / ATI is that, at least in the last generation, the Radeon X19xx was superior to the GeForce 79xx in such calculations. How will it be now? We’ll see ..
