NHK Shows Prototype 33MP Super Hi-Vision Sensor
Japan’s National Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) showcased a working prototype of a 33 million CMOS image sensor last Tuesday. pixels, allowing you to record video 7680×4320. This video standard is called Super Hi-Vision by NHK, has been promoting it since 2021 and has already held a number of successful demonstrations, one of which was at World Expo 2021, when many 600-inch LCD displays were used to display Super Hi-Vision images.
The current demonstration, held as part of the open house days, will last until May 27. NHK’s current Super Hi-Vision cameras consist of four 8MP CMOS sensors co-created with Micron. However, from the very beginning of the joint work with the North American semiconductor IC manufacturer, it was planned to create a corresponding sensor.
The demonstration prototype has a diagonal of 2.5 inches and allows you to capture monochrome video with 4096 gradations of brightness (12-bit) and progressive scan. The size of a single pixel has been kept as much as possible as in 8-megapixel sensors – 3.8 microns.
For ease of reading, 12-bit data is divided into 16 chunks. The prototype provides a refresh rate of 30 frames per second at a clock speed of 125 MHz. In the future, if the image sensor can work with sufficient speed, the developers plan to abandon data fragmentation.
