Fujitsu decided to wait with the release of 1.8-inch hard drives

Fujitsu has suspended plans to release 1.8-inch hard drives as handheld device makers are more interested in flash-based drives, according to the source.

Recall that the Japanese electronics giant previously planned to begin mass production of 1.8-inch hard drives for use in ultraportable laptops, universal players and camcorders in the first half of this fiscal year, which began with the company on April 1.

However, electronics manufacturers are increasingly looking towards solid state drives, since the latter are faster and lighter, although somewhat more expensive than hard drives.

“We want to see if the market moves towards flash or sticks with hard drives,” said a Fujitsu spokesperson.

Lower prices for 2.5-inch hard drives reduce revenues for Fujitsu, which has to compete with companies such as Seagate Technology and Western Digital. The situation in the sector of 1.8-inch hard drives is no better – Toshiba and Samsung Electronics have already settled here.
