Freescale Introduces World’s Thinnest 3-Axis Accelerometer for User Interface
The Freescale Semiconductor family of MEMS sensors has been expanded with a 3-axis accelerometer with a digital output in the list of devices intended for use in controls. According to the developer, the size of the new item is 77% smaller than that of previous models, which makes the MMA7450L (this designation was given to the sensor in the Freescale nomenclature, shown in the top picture) the thinnest device of its kind to date. Accelerometer body is only 0.8mm thick. Designed in an LGA-type housing, the device is well suited for use in miniature electronic devices, where it can be used to organize a user interface based on recording movements in space.
The product is designed for integration with microprocessors and microcontrollers. For this, its configuration provides for the I2C and SPI bus. Direct digital interface to host controller eliminates intermediate conversions. In turn, this has a positive effect on the final structures: the circuit is simplified, the number of components is reduced, energy consumption and dimensions are reduced. An interesting example of the use of the MMA7450L can be paired with a wireless platform: this allows you to create a wide variety of devices – from game controllers to protection schemes for hard drives from falling.
MMA7450L technical data:
- Digital Output – I2C and SPI;
- Low-profile 14-pin LGA-type package 3 x 5 x 0.8 mm;
- High sensitivity to movements along three axes.
- Precision of representation: 64 units of the least significant bit per g (LSB / g) in the acceleration range up to 2g; 64 LSB / g up to 8g in 10-bit mode;
- Consumption current: in active mode – 400 μA; in standby mode – 5 μA;
- Supply voltage – 2.4-3.6 V;
- Shock resistance – up to 10,000 g.
