NCP5810 Converter Will Power AMOLED Portable Electronics
ON Semiconductor Introduces NCP5810 DC-DC Converter IC. The device with two outputs (positive and negative polarity) provides output power up to 2 W. Precise regulation of the output voltage, high conversion frequency and compact body make the novelty especially suitable for use as a power source for displays made with Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diodes (AMOLED) technology.
Recall that AMOLED is a promising direction for the development of displays for portable electronics. Several manufacturers are expected to launch AMOLED displays (a prototype of one such display is pictured) into serial production this year or early in the future. The most notable advantages of these displays are the high color contrast and image quality for video playback compared to modern LCDs. At the same time, as you know, you have to pay for everything. In the case of AMOLED, the price for high picture quality comes at the cost of complicating power schemes. In particular, AMOLED displays are very sensitive to fluctuations in power supply voltage.
