The new miCARD combines the advantages of MMC and USB 2.0

The MultiMediaCard Association (MMCA) has announced the specification of the new miCARD. The novelty has dimensions of 12 x 21 x 1.95 mm, and two interfaces – MMC and USB, with which it is fully electrically, mechanically and software compatible. On the one hand, this allows it to be used in portable devices such as cameras, smartphones and PDAs, and on the other hand, to exchange data with PCs, printers and consumer electronics without any “intermediaries”. The card connects to a USB port without requiring a special slot or device to work with memory cards.

The maximum baud rate corresponds to the capabilities of the USB 2 interface.0 – up to 480 Mbps. According to the MMCA, the card is the first of its kind to combine the strengths of the MMC System Specification v4.2 and USB 2.0.

Initially, passive mechanical adapters will be available that will allow the use of the miCARD in electronic devices designed for MMC cards. In the future, such devices will be equipped with reduced-size slots specifically designed for miCARD rollers. The miCARD is directly connected to the USB Type-A connector.
