AMD is committed to helping developers take full advantage of the three generations of AMD64 multi-core systems. To this end, the AMD Developer Center is being modernized. Starting this quarter, AMD will offer customers and partners easier access to a test environment that includes all three generations of AMD Opteron multi-core processors, including the forthcoming quad-core processor, code-named Barcelona.
To meet the growing need for applications optimized to run on multi-core processors, the center offers access to fully configured clusters and servers for application development, testing and optimization. It also opens up an easy way to migrate applications from single-core to dual-core and beyond to quad-core.
AMD’s collaboration with the developer community enables the latter to create next-generation compilers that take advantage of multi-core configurations. Examples include high-performance products built by the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) and The Portland Group (PGI) with support for quad-core AMD Opterons. Working with Microsoft and Sun has resulted in Microsoft Visual Studio and Sun Studio developer tools to also optimize code for AMD quad-core processors.
The list of hardware that the center offers to third-party developers includes:
- Modernized cluster Smith v2.0: built with partners – Colfax International, Mellanox Technologies, W.L. Gore & Associates, and QLogic; Consists of 40 nodes on second generation AMD Opteron processors and InfiniBand DDR Network. A total of 160 AMD Opteron Model 8220 processors are running in this demanding application cluster.
