Old New Requirements: Blu-ray Disc Association Comments
As we recently reported, the Blu-ray Disc Association recently announced to the public that all new generation Blu-ray optical disc players released after October 31 will have to meet the new requirements. Due to the fact that various speculations immediately arose on the Web, the leadership of the association made explanations.
First, according to Andy Parsons, head of the Blu-ray Disc Association’s North American Promotion Committee, the new requirements expand the scope of existing features, but do not add fundamentally new ones. In particular, we are talking about BD-Java, which should be supported by all players from the very first day of sales. Parsons cited The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Chicken Little as examples of films already released that use BD-Java for interactive games.
However, as they say, they should, but not at all. And the whole point is that now there is a period during which manufacturers were allowed to implement the functions included in the standard not completely. And this period will just end this fall.
In addition to the fact that starting October 31, manufacturers will have to strictly adhere to all previous rules, several new requirements will be presented. These include a minimum memory size of 256 MB for basic DVD players and 1 GB for BD Live devices (a service that allows you to download additional content from the Internet). The latter, in addition, will have to provide mixing of the audio effects generated by the player with the sound recorded on the optical disc. To implement these functions, BD-Java will be used, but not some new version, but the same version that should have been implemented in all devices.
It is worth noting that HD DVD already has a minimum memory requirement of 128 MB, an Ethernet connection for interactive services and an additional video device for picture-in-picture video. The memory is used by the player to store bookmarks, and a number of movies already use picture-in-picture functions. It is also worth noting that these requirements are worth keeping in mind when it comes to using Blu-Ray and HD-DVD in a PC.
