Maxell LTO Ultrium 4 – 1.6 TB in one cartridge
Maxell, known for its developments in the field of tape drives and related removable media – recall that at one time it was the first to release Super DLTtape I, LTO Ultrium 1, LTO Ultrium 2, Super DLTtape II, LTO Ultrium 3 and DLTtape S4 cartridges, announced the start of supplies of LTO Ultrium 4 cartridges. Up to 2x the capacity of its predecessor, LTO Ultrium 3. The manufacturer calls the features of Maxell LTO Ultrium 4 the use of special measures for protecting information.
According to the company, the cartridges presented are the first LTO Ultrium 4 products to undergo interoperability testing, the results of which ensure usability with a variety of drives and interchangeability with other media.
Taking into account data compression, the speed of information exchange when using new cartridges can reach 240 Mb / s. One cartridge capacity is 1.6TB. However, this is not the limit: the plans for the development of LTO Ultrium technology include the appearance of 3.2 TB cartridges. LTO Ultrium 4 backward compatibility allows LTO Ultrium 4 and legacy equipment and cartridges to be used in parallel. The main innovations in LTO Ultrium 4 are support for encryption and WORM (Write Once, Read Many) functionality – the latter first appeared in the previous generation products, LTO Ultrium 3,.
Some technical details of LTOU4 / 800 and LTOU4 / 800W (WORM) media:
- Volume (uncompressed / compressed) – 800 GB / 1.6 TB;
- Exchange speed (without compression / with compression) – 120/240 Mb / s;
- Belt length – 820 m;
- Tape thickness – 6.6 microns;
- Ribbon width – 1/2 inch (12.65 mm);
- Cartridge Dimensions – 102.0 x 105.4 x 21.5mm.
To enable consumers to quickly distinguish between re-write and write-once cartridges, the manufacturer used a color scheme. Rewritable media comes in one color, WORM in two color.
Maxell plans to develop tape cartridges with a volume of about 10 TB, which will use the NanoCAP technology created by the company’s specialists, built on the use of microscopic spherical magnetic particles.
