USB multiplexer 2.0 reduces the number of connectors
A very interesting novelty has appeared in the range of products of the Intersil company, which received the designation ISL54200. It is a USB 2 multiplexer.0 – a chip that provides a simple and very flexible way to connect portable devices with and without USB interface.
The ISL54200’s flexibility comes from the ability to switch between data sources with different baud rates and signal levels, and output them to a common connector. For example, when used inside a portable electronic device, say, a cell phone, the multiplexer allows USB High Speed (480 Mbps) and UART or USB Full Speed (12 Mbps) interfaces to share the same connector. If such a chip is installed in an automotive on-board system, one single connector can serve the needs of devices with different interfaces. Finally, using a multiplexer in a laptop docking station, one USB host can be used to form two ports serving external devices, supporting High Speed or Full Speed USB specifications.
From a technical point of view, the ISL54200 covers all the needs of the listed applications: 800 MHz bandwidth, minimal channel impedance, and quiescent current of only 80 nA, which is important for battery-powered devices. The microcircuit is operational at a supply voltage from 2.7 to 5.5 V.
