Atheros Introduces Next Generation XSPAN 802 Adapters.11n draft 2.0
Atheros Announces Second Generation of XSPAN Product Family Compliant with Draft 802 Specification Revision 2.11n (802.11n draft 2.0). We have already mentioned these solutions in the news about the beginning of 802 certification.11n draft 2.0 devices by the Wi-Fi Alliance. The new items are expected to be demonstrated by the company during the Computex exhibition, which will be held in Taipei from June 5 to 9.
The AR9001 XSPAN family of new solutions is based on the system-on-a-chip (SoC) technology, containing the basic logic, MAC-controller 802.11n and 400 MHz WNPU (Wireless Network Processor). Two versions of the solution are designed to use the most popular configurations among a wide class of users: AR9130 with 2×2 MIMO and Fast Ethernet and AR9132 with 3×3 MIMO and Gigabit
Ethernet. Systems-to-Chips are paired with a single-chip AR910x RF transceiver operating at one (2.4 GHz) or dual (2.4 / 5 GHz) frequencies. There are four solution configurations in the family:
- AR9001AP-2NG: single frequency band 11n, 2×2 MIMO, Fast Ethernet
- AR9001AP-2NX: dual band 11n, 2×2 MIMO, Fast Ethernet
- AR9001AP-3NG: single frequency band 11n, 3×3 MIMO, Gigabit Ethernet
- AR9001AP-3NX: dual band 11n, 3×3 MIMO, Gigabit Ethernet
To further reduce the cost of end devices, Atheros has added the AR8216 Fast Ethernet switch to the reference designs of AR9001AP APs and routers.
Another promising direction for integrating new products in the AR9001AP family – devices with a USB interface. For such solutions, Atheros offers three configurations:
- AR9001U-2NX: dual frequency bands 11n, 2×2 MIMO
- AR9001U-2NG: single frequency band 11n, 2×2 MIMO
- AR9001U-NG: single 11n frequency band, 1×2 MIMO
According to data published in the company’s press release, dual-band 802.11n solutions can provide up to 600 Mbps throughput – up to 200 Mbps per link (AR9001AP-3NX2 with 600 MHz WNPU processor).
Sample solutions are currently available, and mass production is scheduled to begin in Q3.
