Wi-Fi Alliance Announces 802 Certification.11n draft 2.0-devices
The Wi-Fi Alliance yesterday officially unveiled the logos that will be supplied to devices based on the second draft of the 802 specifications.11n (Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 802.11n draft 2.0), and also announced that the equipment certification program will begin no later than the end of June. This brings the moment when IEEE 802.11n will finally become an international standard and, most likely, will no longer be called “draft”, although so far the technology continues to “drag” the epithet “draft”.
802.11n draft 2.0 has the potential to deliver up to five times the data transfer rate of the current generation of Wi-Fi networks.
It is planned that the Wi-Fi Alliance certification program will have to first of all help buyers find equipment that has successfully passed the tests for interoperability with devices from different manufacturers. This, we recall, was one of the most painful places 802.11n devices introduced last year.
The alliance press release also provides a list of manufacturers who have provided their equipment for testing:
- Atheros: Dual Mode 2.4 / 5GHz XSPAN Router with SST Draft 2.0 802.11n (built on Atheros AR7100 processor) and 2.4 / 5 GHz XSPAN CardBus adapter with SST Draft 2.0 802.11n
- Broadcom: 802.BCM94705GMP & 802 Intensi-Fi 11n Router.11n Intensi-Fi adapter BCM94321MC123
- Cisco: access node
- Intel: adapter 4965AGN
- Marvell: TopDog solutions for base stations and access points
- Ralink: MIMObility RT2800PD chipset (RT2860 802.11n 2T3R MAC / BBP and RT2850 802.11n dual band RF module) and MIMObility (TM) RT2800PD Access Point
The software used to test the hardware is the Wi-Fi Alliance and WildPackets OmniPeek Workgroup Pro software.
