Apple to release iPod with Wi-Fi?
Taiwan-based DigiTimes claims Apple plans to unveil a new Wi-Fi-equipped iPod in the second half of this year.
The publication, citing sources from enterprises producing components for digital players, reports that Apple’s longtime partner Hon Hai (known for its Foxconn trademark) will be engaged in OEM production of new iPods with Wi-Fi adapters, and the supplier of Wi-Fi modules for them will be Universal Scientific Industrial (USI). The company will begin shipping this month, and the first wireless iPods will roll off the Hon Hai assembly line in the third quarter of this year.
And while some observers believe wirelessly equipping the iPod is a counterpunch in the face of the Microsoft Zune, there is one more thing to keep in mind: the Apple TV factor. Apple TV – Mac – iPod integration opens up new opportunities for Apple, as well as for its customers, and in this context, DigiTimes information looks even more believable.
Recall that a few weeks ago, it was this edition that first announced the postponement of the release of Mac OS X Leopard to October.
