Spansion MirrorBit: 128 MB of memory and a record frequency for SPI – 104 MHz
It hasn’t been long since the announcement of the MirrorBit Eclipse architecture, and Spansion has one more novelty ready. This time it’s about the industry’s fastest 128MB Flash with Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). The 90nm device is expected to help manufacturers reduce the cost of electronic devices by adopting a more cost-effective serial interface while meeting the large memory requirements of modern electronics. Spansion has SPI products ranging from 4 MB to 64 MB.
The introduction of the new memory eases the fact that the designers have retained pinout compatibility with smaller MirrorBit SPI chips. In other words, electronics manufacturers do not have to make changes to the PCB layout and the location of the contact pads and elements. Instead, when designing several modifications of the same device, differing, in particular, in the amount of flash memory, it is enough to develop a single platform. To speed up flash memory programming at the factory, a parallel access mode (x8 Parallel mode) is provided. The microcircuit, designated S25FL128P, is available in 16-pin SOIC and WSON 6×8 packages.
MirrorBit SPI memory is targeted for use in printers, network equipment and set-top boxes. Preview samples of the new product are currently available, serial production will begin later in the current quarter.
