Can the display be a power source at the same time?
It seems that not only can, but will soon become. In any case, such a forecast was indicated by the source, citing as confirmation two interesting developments recently patented by Motorola and Nokia.
In the first case, we are talking about a technology focused on applications in cell phones. The second is about larger structures such as signs and billboards.
Motorola has received a patent (US 7206044) for a liquid crystal display device with a built-in solar panel. Self-Powered Bulletin Board Patent (US 2021/0080925) granted by Nokia.
Motorola’s development is aimed at meeting the growing need to increase the battery life of mobile equipment. As cell phones expand their functionality more and more – offering Internet access, the ability to take photos and videos, listen to music, watch TV, use GPS tools – their lithium-ion batteries are no longer able to cope with the task assigned to them. To help the batteries “hold out” longer between two charges without increasing their size and weight, manufacturers tried to place solar cells inside the LCD screen.
Until recently, this approach was not successful because the LCD absorbs most of the light incident on it before it reaches the solar panel. The secret that Motorola engineers resorted to is that the filters used in the design of the LCD screen. By choosing a polymer that reflects light in relatively narrow ranges of red, blue and green light, the developers were able to provide both a full picture and a sufficient amount of energy for a solar battery. Although there is no data yet on the timing of commercialization, the prospect of producing cell phones that recharge their batteries with solar energy is very real.
Meanwhile, Nokia specialists have already made a working prototype of a self-powered monochrome information panel, the screen of which simultaneously serves to display information and to generate energy. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles became the key element providing such properties of the screen.
The cells of the screen, consisting of this material, have interesting properties: they appear colorless or black, depending on whether voltage is applied to them or not. At the same time, when the particles are in a “colorless state”, they generate electricity under the influence of light. The screen can store it in a rechargeable battery and use it to maintain the required cells in the “black state”. A bulletin board or advertising sign, sharpened in this way, does not need an external power source.
