Mitsubishi Electric raises solar panel efficiency to record 18%
According to Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, its specialists managed to set a world record for photoelectric conversion efficiency (solar battery efficiency) equal to 18.0%. The indicated value was fixed for a square cell (side size – 150 mm) made of polycrystalline silicon. It is 1.2% higher than the previous record. The measurement results were obtained at the AIST (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science And Technology).
Recall that the development of solar panels is one of the most promising areas of work in the search for alternative sources of electrical energy.
The most important advantages of solar panels include the environmental friendliness of power plants built on their basis and the use of a renewable energy source – sunlight. Silicon is a key component of most of the batteries we create. However, its supply is not keeping up with the growing demand, therefore, specialists from different companies are looking for ways to reduce silicon consumption by reducing the thickness of the wafers and increasing the conversion efficiency.
The use of a surface texture with low reflectivity and an improvement in the process of applying electrodes to the silicon surface, aimed at reducing losses from the “shading” of the crystal with an outer grid of electrodes (compared with previous models, the reduction reached 40%), made it possible to increase the efficiency of the solar battery to 18.0%.
The company plans to start using the development in serial production towards the end of this year.
