16 GB of memory in a handheld computer? Toshiba’s new technology makes it possible
It seems that quite recently we have witnessed a rapid growth in the capacity of solid-state drives and their influx into portable computers, and Toshiba, according to a source, has already announced the creation of technology that allows you to embed in smaller devices up to 16 GB of flash memory, and is compatible with MMCA (MultiMediaCard Association) 4.2. Built-in flash memory is designed for integration into mobile consumer electronics devices – smartphones, communicators, multimedia players.
According to the source, trial samples will be available in June this year, the start of mass production is scheduled for December. Toshiba will begin shipping trial samples of 8GB embedded memory this month, which will begin mass production in July. In total, the Toshiba family of embedded memory now contains devices with a capacity of 1 to 16 GB.
Inside one 16-GB microcircuit there are eight 2-GB crystals, each of which is manufactured in compliance with the 56-nm process technology (see. picture). Despite the fact that the cost of such solutions is likely to be considerable, the company expects to supply a large number of 16 GB devices – in billions of monthly batches.
