Israeli scientists on the path to creating cyborgs? A prototype memory chip based on a neural network

Researchers Itay Baruchi and Eshel Ben-Jacob
from the University of Tel Aviv, conducted an experiment, during which was
demonstrated the ability to store information (simple memories) in
array of neurons. This, in turn, is the first serious step towards
paths to the creation of cyborgs, since living material was used as a memory.

To create a memory (essentially a record of information) in these neurons
the researchers used a chemical stimulant that was injected directly into
desired area and induced the second pattern (sample) of data here. So
Thus, for some time, both portions of the same data coexist – about 24
hours. A day later, the third pattern is also induced. All three memory areas
exist simultaneously, without alternating with each other and without influencing each other in
for about 40 hours.

This is the first, allegedly, such experience in which data was stored
in the neural network for such a long time.

The researchers described their experiments in more detail in the monthly publication “Physical
Review E “of the American Physical Society (May 16 issue).
Chemically controlled neurons, as noted, can become one of the key
moments in solving the exact scheme of the memory and learning mechanisms of living
organisms.
