Published the 6th edition of the list of the most powerful computers in the CIS Top50
Research Computing Center of Moscow State University. M.IN.Lomonosov State University and the Interdepartmental Supercomputer Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences announced the release of the sixth edition of the list of the most powerful computers in the CIS Top50. The announcement of the new edition of the list took place at a press conference with the participation of representatives of HP, IBM, Intel and T-Platforms, who presented their views on the domestic industry of high-performance solutions.
The sixth edition of the list showed a record increase in performance of the most powerful computers in the CIS. For the first time in the history of the rating, the total real performance of systems on the Linpack test doubled in six months, amounting to 45.8 trillion operations per second (TFlops). At the same time, 7 out of 13 new systems of the sixth edition entered the top ten of the rating. Supercomputer
MVS-15000VM, installed at the MSC RAS and holding the first place in the list for one and a half years, gave way to a new leader – the supercomputer SKIF Cyberia by T-Platforms with a real performance of 9 TFlops installed at Tomsk State University.
The supercomputer of the ISC RAS based on the IBM PowerPC platform with a real performance of 6.7 TFlops took the second position. The following three systems also appeared in the ranking for the first time. HP Corporation presented a new supercomputer of the MSC RAS with a real performance of 4.8 TFlops, as well as a supercomputer of Sberbank of Russia with a performance of 3 TFlops, which has become the most powerful supercomputer in the financial sector. The fifth position was taken by a computer with a peak performance of 2.2 TFlops of the Institute of Cybernetics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, supplied by the Ukrainian developer Entry. Another new system from Ukraine took the 7th place in the rating: a computer of the Kiev Polytechnic Institute with a real performance of 1.5 TFlops was supplied by the Ukrainian company “Yustar”. “T-Platforms”: systems of the St. Petersburg State Polytechnic and Tomsk Polytechnic Universities with a real productivity of 1 TFlops and 791 GFlops, respectively.
Thus, the number of computers of the “teraflop range” (with a real performance of more than 1 TFlops) in the CIS has tripled over the past six months, and the lower limit of the top ten in terms of performance has doubled. The rapid growth of the market for high-performance solutions in the CIS during this period was ensured, first of all, by the activity of universities: out of 13 new systems, 8 were installed in universities in Russia and Ukraine. The share of computers used in science and education increased from 22% to 30% due to a proportional reduction in the share of industrial use systems: the number of the latter decreased from 28% to 20%. At the same time, the number of industrial supercomputers is growing in many countries. For example, in the list of the 100 most powerful computers in China, 50% of the systems work for industry, of which 23% are in the oil industry.
Another notable trend of the 6th edition of the list is the growth of productivity and technological novelty of the component base of solutions. Thus, more than half of new systems use dual-core Intel Xeon 5000 and 5100 series processors, and high-performance system networks of the InfiniBand standard are confidently replacing the usual Gigabit Ethernet: the share of computers using InfiniBand has grown by 18%. At the same time, systems with cluster architecture have finally supplanted supercomputers with shared memory: the share of clusters for the first time reached 100%.
“Recent changes in the Russian supercomputer market indicate a significant qualitative shift. The nature of the demand for high-performance systems has changed: our customers are approaching their investments in HPC more thoughtfully, taking into account the growing needs in the future, and see the need for complex software and hardware solutions on a turnkey basis. Today, a key factor in the supplier’s success is the ability to offer a full range of professional HPC services, from component development to support of supercomputer centers, and this is our main competitive advantage, ”said Vsevolod Opanasenko, CEO of T-Platforms.
The share of IBM corporation by the number of systems submitted to the Top50 list was 30%. Also, 30% was the share of systems manufactured by T-Platforms, which supplied more than half of all new computers of the 6th edition of the list. HP has increased the share of its systems in the list from 20% to 22%. The share of 36% of the total real performance of all systems in the list fell on the supply of the company
T-Platforms (16.7 TFlops); 25% each – for computers manufactured by IBM and HP (11 TFlops each).
